"Journeyman -noun; men -pl; A skilled person who has served an apprenticeship at a trade or craft. The status of journeyman indicates that a person has mastered all the skills for that craft."
The Journeymen began life when guitarist Leighton Collins began a ‘scratch’ band at Swansea’s Adam & Eve. The band survived for a few years with no fixed line-up, using a regular and ever expanding pool of guest musicians from within South Wales. By 2007 the band had eventually settled into a line-up featuring Leighton on lead guitar, Mike Bollom on Bass, Terry Ainge on Drums and the inimitable Switchy on lead vocals. However, Switchy was plagued with a succession of throat problems and in March 2007 decided that he needed to give his vocal chords a well deserved rest.
This left the J-Men with a problem, as they still had some gigs on the calendar. Terry decided to call Phil Rowe to deputise on vocals. Phil had all but retired from the music scene for the past six years, surfacing only for the odd one-off gig, or to help out some old mates when they were stuck. Although Leighton & Phil had never met, Phil had sung before with Mike during his time in The Blues Bunch, and with Terry in The Barrow Boys. Through a muddled-together set of almost known songs, by the end of that first gig the band had obviously clicked, and Phil ended his ‘retirement’ to become a J-Man. Through the last 3 years the band have slowly and naturally changed from their original blues based set, through blues based rock and eventually becoming one of Wales’ finest classic rock bands.
